Frequently asked questions
1) At what age children start brushing their teeth?
Children should be brushing their own teeth
morning and night by age 3 to 4.
2) When should I change my toothbrush ?
If used three times a day,
the toothbrush should be
changed every 6 months.
3) Are there other alternatives available for patients who
do not wish to use removable
prostheses ?
In modern dentistry, dental
implants (screwed into the jaw bone) eliminate the need for use of removable
prostheses.
4) Does the injection used for dental local anesthesia
cause any harm on the body ?
As with any medications
administered in various diseases,
these anesthetic agents could have adverse effects when given in
overdoses. The recently developed “last generation” drugs have somewhat less
adverse effects. 7 injections can be made at a time without causing
anesthesia in the body.
5) Is it necessary
to brush teeth three times a day ?
Experts give the ideal number
as three (every 8 hours); however
twice-daily (in the morning and evening) brushing would suffice as well. What
is important is not the number, but
how well the brushing is done.
6) Is it appropriate
to administer antibiotics in dental inflammations ?
Administering antibiotics is
one of the treatment methods and should be decided upon by a doctor and not
be started without consulting a doctor.
7) Is a therapy without
pain and discomfort possible ?
Treatments undertaken in the
oral cavity are performed after anaesthesia (loss of pain feeling) and cause
no pains.
8) Does tooth stone cleaning cause damage to the teeth ?
It causes no harm when
performed by experts, using appropriate methods.
9) Should every aching
tooth be extracted ?
Absolutely not ! If the pain is caused by
decay, it should be tried to save the tooth through canal therapy or filling.
10) Should a dentist
be visited during pregnancy ?
It is recommended to visit a
dentist before the pregnancy. During the first month and the last trimester of
the pregnancy, it is recommended to carry out dental treatments without
giving anaesthesia.
11) When should children be taken to a dentist ?
Regular oral examinations by a dentist are
recommended from 3 to 4 years of age onwards.
12) Is there any
therapy for a cracked tooth, other than extraction ?
Not every cracked tooth needs
to be extracted; the tooth can be saved using various treatment methods
(fillings or placement of veneers).
13) What is the treatment for sensitive teeth ?
If the sensitivity is due to
decay, it is filled; in case of tooth
calculi, they are removed.
14) I wish to have aesthetic teeth, but do not want my
teeth to be cut down; is there a
different modality ensuring this ?
Aesthetics is a very broad
notion; laminate veneers can be placed to satisfy best your expectations,
without cutting down your teeth.
15) Does a prosthesis need to be removed in the evening ?
Experts recommend the
prostheses to be removed in order to enable tissue resting; prostheses can be
removed during the day or the night as desired.
16) Should every wisdom tooth needs to be extracted ?
Not every wisdom tooth is
extracted; it does not need to be extracted, if it is completely erupted and
decay-free.
17) What is a root
therapy, why is it performed ?
If the decay reaches the roots, a simple
filling is not adequate and it should be accompanied by the extraction of the
nerves located in the root and the filling of the root.
18) Isn’t it appropriate
to have all the remaining teeth extracted and have a total denture fitted
at older age ?
Wearing a prosthesis is not a
very easy thing; it is difficult to ensure its immobility in the mouth; therefore
it is absolutely not recommended to have all the teeth extracted, as every
remaining tooth will hold the
prosthesis and prevent it from moving.
19) What harm does it cause to crack nuts with teeth ?
Our teeth too are prone to
cracks as any other object in the nature; therefore, it is not recommended to
crack nuts with teeth.
20) Does a filled tooth decays ?
If not adequately brushed, a
filled tooth can decay as well; furthermore, it should not forgotten that
every filling has a certain lifespan.
21) Does brushing with
carbonate whiten teeth ?
It can whiten to a certain degree, but this kind of
cleaning causes abrasion on the teeth.
22) Is there such a thing as “permanent” bleaching ?
Whitening methods applied
under medical supervision provide permanent whiteness. Whitening performed at
home with products obtained from the
market give transient results.
23) Is it necessary to visit a dentist in case of teeth
sensitive to hot and cold ?
It is absolutely necessary to
visit a dentist in such a situation.
24) Is a therapy always necessary after a tooth extraction
?
After an extraction the
neighboring teeth move towards the resulting space and the tooth order is
deranged; therefore this gap should be restored by placing a bridge or implant (bone screw).
25) Isn’t it possible to keep all the teeth in mouth
lifelong ?
If they are cared for regularly and losses are
prevented by a dentist, all teeth can be kept lifelong.
26) What should be done for healthy teeth ?
Tooth cleaning should be
maintained by bursting three times a day and using dental floss
regularly;”furthermore, a dentist should be visited every 6 months so that
potential problems can be dignosed and eliminated as early as possible.
27) Can a porcelain tooth break ?
Porcelain teeth can crack or
break as well; we must be careful when using these kind of teeth just as with natural teeth.
28) When is a porcelain tooth indicated ?
If there is a substantial
loss of substance in the tooth body, that is not correctable with a filling,
a porcelain tooth is then indicated. However porcelain teeth could be
fitted for aesthetical reasons as
well.
